HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RUG?
While handmade rugs accentuate your living areas, it is important to choose the right one while buying. Here’s how…
Color:
The color of the rug is an important point to look for. Choose a neutral shade or single color for your space with a splash of colors or multiple patterns. Dark colors give an intimate feel to your large room as they compress space. Choose neutral tones for the bedroom as they are relaxing. Choose bold and bright colors for kid’s room as they are vivacious and peppy.
Texture:
The texture is the next important feature to consider while buying a rug. A space with a mix of different textures looks rich and layered, and a simple way to manage this tone is by considering the texture of your rug. Consider the finishes of your existing furniture, and look for contrast. For example, a sisal rug complements a soft fabric like velvet. A sleek leather sofa will look great with a longer, fluffier pile.
Size:
Make sure the rug fits the size of your seating area. Aim for keeping front legs only on the rugs if it is not possible to get all pieces of furniture on it. After all, your feet will be on the rug while sitting, not a floor.
The Room:
Different rugs are meant for different areas. Hallways and kitchens receive more footfall than others, therefore, it is best to choose a rug that is hardwearing and easy to clean. A slightly darker shade or patterned rug is ideas as they are less likely to make footprints visible.
Personal Taste:
You can consider your taste even with the rules of colors and textures. Start by looking at rugs that appeal to you. Imagine sights, sounds, and memories. Maybe you have a rug under your computer table that reminds you of your grandpa's teacup. The point is here to incorporate your aesthetic sense (but that should be tasteful).
Materials:
Wool, cotton or silk? The material of a rug is an important consideration while buying. For example, silk is known for amazing strength and sheen. It also unleashes the vibes of luxury. Wool is also a popular fiber that resists the beatings and footfalls over time. It is a comfortable and practical piece of fiber.
Function:
The size and shape of your rug will be determined by the purpose of the rug. Will you use it as a centerpiece of the room? Will it be placed under a glass table? Its usage will decide its size.
Pile Thickness:
How the rug will feel underfoot? Well, that’s all about pile thickness is. Choose a thick and soft pile if you want to feel comfortable on the rug. Buy a thin rug made from seagrass for the areas that receive heavy footfalls.
HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR RUGS?
Vacuuming:
Rug and carpet require weekly to monthly vacuuming to remove the dust that trapped in the fabric. It will not only clean them but also extend their lifespan. However, avoid using a high powered rotating brush vacuum cleaner for daily vacuuming on expensive rugs like Persian rugs as the brush can damage the pile or fringe.
Carpet Cleaning:
Regular cleaning will help you get rid of invisible dirt and stains accumulated on the carpet. The longer you let dirt and stains to remain on the rug, the trickier it will be to completely remove them.
Quick Action on Stain:
Make sure to immediately remove any blot stain or spillage on the carpet using a clean dry cloth as soon as possible. It will be difficult to get them removed if you let them sit for longer. Or you can call a professional carpet cleaner.
Protect Them from Direct Sun:
UV rays from the sun can fade natural dye on the rug if it is exposed to the direct sun daily. Lower the curtain to prevent some of the sun rays to reach the carpet. Besides, rotate your rug at least twice a year to keep the possible color changes evenly across the rugs.
HISTORY OF HANDMADE RUGS
The art of making rugs is said to thrive on the plains of Central Asia centuries ago. Nomads made rugs to feel warmer in winters as well as to decorate their tents. Moreover, the rugs were easy to handle than the sheepskin coverings. The earlier rugs were made from the materials obtained from the herds of goats and flock of sheep. They were prepared on the wooden looms that are still used by the nomads. The nomads used geometrical or curvilinear motifs on the rugs.
According to some Chinese texts belonging to the Sassanid Dynasty (224 - 641 AD), Emperor Heraclius transported a variety of carpets from the conquest of Ctesiphon, the capital of Sassanian. In 637 AD, Arab conquered Ctesiphon and went away with many valuable carpets as their war booty. And the famous among them was the Springtime of Khosro, a popular garden carpet. However, the Arabs cut down this splendid carpet into many pieces, selling each piece individually.
The art of handmade carpets reached beyond boundaries to Persia and India during the 16th century. It was the 18th century when handmade carpets were in high demand, prompting European and American companies to set up their businesses in Iran to produce rugs for western markets.
In 1947, the oldest rug was found in an excavation in Siberia. It was named the Pazyryk carpet or the Gorny Altai carpet. Featuring the dimension of 183x200 cm, the rug was frozen in a block of ice when discovered. It has higher knots than most of the modern rugs and is the inspiration behind the most hand-knotted designs today.
Today, handmade carpet weaving is one of the old handicrafts in the world that is still in practice. Hand-knotted carpets are known for their quality and mesmerizing artistic patterns.
